Foods to Eat After_Wisdom Tooth SurgeryHello, Friend!

Wisdom teeth can be pesky little buggers, and while some folks have the privilege of a wide jaw; most patients end up needing them pulled.

I assume you’ve recently had wisdom teeth removed, or at least know you’re on the list and want to do research either way. You’ve been told “no eating normal foods” a few times at least now, and to some that is a little easier said than done.

Flash forward to waking up after surgery, when you’re stuck in bed & scrolling through social media with a swollen jaw, holes in your gums and a hungry belly.

Most likely thinking to yourself;

“What the heck can I even eat right now?”

I’ve been there.

There is a few really good blogs out there covering which foods are safe to eat during this time, such as this one; by Andrea Fabry. I loved having the ability to access blogger knowledge for answers. So, I wanted to share my experience as well.

WHAT I ATE:

  • Mashed Banana
  • Lipton Soup (Small Noodle)
  • Apple Sauce
  • Grits
  • Jell-O
  • Pudding
  • Broth or Broth Soup
  • KFC Mashed Potatoes, or Homemade (super mashed or whipped)

It is important to stick to liquid foods for a week or two. You do not want to cut/clog your gums, or rip out the blood clots. I also noticed that any chewy food seriously hurt my jaw for at least three weeks.

Especially if you develop dry sockets; keep to liquids and clean the sockets thoroughly. You can safely use a saline, or home-made Himalayan Salt Rinses for a better healing boost.

Bsmok3aCUAAzASsTomato soup and KFC mashed potatoes (they’re super soft) have been a life saver. I started the potatoes after day 5.

I of course get them without the gravy, as they use a meat gravy. It is delicious even without it, and has been a nice tummy-fill for the last two weeks. Do NOT make the mistake of getting a small side, as it is only three bites of potatoes. Literally for a little over a dollar more you can get a huge side of potatoes that has like 5-6 of the “small” serving. The picture below is a medium, not available at most stores. The small is half this size and the large is 3x this size.

Once you can eat a bit more normal foods- usually around week three- you can start eating noodle soups, cheese, mac n’ cheese, pancakes and more.

I remember looking for a Healing Timeline so I could gather an idea of how long the pain would last, and there isn’t very many available. I went through the process with the knowledge I had found, and waited to share my own so folks had a timeline to prepare for their own healing process. Everyone wants to know how long the pain will last, how long the swelling will stay, and how long until you can eat solid foods. Read here to see my experience and gather a guesstimate for your own!

A few extra tips for a suffering Homie:

Tips (1)   There is a remedy that most bloggers use; and it’s called Clove Oil. I made the mistake of not picking any up, and quickly wished I did. Clove Oil is used to numb the area, and help the healing process along. Many bloggers replaced their pain medications completely for Clove Oil.

After the first three days a cold-press becomes inadequate and I switched over to the 10 hr Hand Warmers to reduce pain/swelling. At this point, the cold will make your jaw ache more than it will help.

7 Minute Lunch Recipe!

I don’t know about y’all- but I sure enjoy a lazy lunch.

I know the nearest restaurant or fast food joint sounds pretty great for convenience sake; but why not skip that today so you can feel amazing?

Now, ain’t nobody got time for cooking on a workday- but what if I told you that it was possible? What if I gave you the most simple, delicious recipe known to lunch history?

No, but on a real note- this is fast, simple, and totally delicious. You can make it on lunch break, or prepare & pack it in about 5 minutes. This recipe is cram-packed with nutrients to fill your belly and keep you energized throughout the rest of the day.

Also, while topping-loaded salads will always have a place in my heart- there is nothing like a simple salad. The star of the show is really the lettuce- and some of you may think this is weird, but I LOVE lettuce- and loading it with toppings can hide the delicious texture & flavor of the leafy-green awesomeness.

7 Minute Lunch_Salad & Sandies

So, this will take five seconds to read- because it’s so simple. Ready? 🙂

Step 1:

Prepare the lettuce and veggies by washing & cutting them accordingly.

I like to cut the butt’s off of the romaine, and add it to the compost.

Step 2:

All you have to do is throw it in a large bowl, along with the crouton’s, cheese and Garlic Expressions .

Toss that bad boy, and put it in a bowl or container for an awesome lunch!

Step 3:

Slice and toast the Ciabatta Buns, and add the cheese to the top while it’s still hot.

Step 4:

Slice the remaining veggies and lettuce after washing them thoroughly. Add them to the sandwich, add some  Organic Dijon Mustard

and voila!

Literally one of my absolute favorite lunches; done in five minutes. SO EASY.

Tyler & I eat this very often, as it is easy to meal prep, or toss together the day-of, and it’s super cheap.

Fat Burning Foods

On the topic of healthy eating, here is our simplified Pad Thai Recipe!:

 

Everyone loves food, right?

How amaze-balls would it be if I told you certain foods burned fat while you ate them? What if i also told you all of them are super delicious and easy to cook?

Would you crap your pants with excitement?

Me too.

… Just kidding.

I definitely love food. I love the therapeutic nature of cooking, I love exploring different cultures and palettes, I love feeding my temple with foods that help it grow healthier everyday.

But really though, some of these are super foods that should be implemented in your diet everyday to achieve optimum weight and health.

I wanted to share with y’all just how eating can be beneficial to weight loss and over-all health. Our body is our temple, and it thrives off the nutrients or poisons we feed it. I’ve enjoyed switching my diet to foods that balance my cakras, heal my PCOS, and help me reach a healthy weight, because the effects are absolutely worth it. My head is clear, my body isn’t tense, my attitude is better and my ability to immediately delete a negative thought is heightening.

Here are a few foods I’ve implemented for weight loss!

Avocado

  • Did you know that Avocado lowers your cholesterol? They contain high amounts of monounsaturated oleic acid, naturally decreasing the dangerous LDL cholesterol in your blood while increasing the healthy HDL cholesterol
  • Contains high fiber and healthy fats to help turn off the “hungry switch”
  • Vitamins E & C, as well as carotenoids in this fruit help reduce inflammation, which in turn reduces pain
  • High fiber promotes healthy digestion
  • Vitamin E & Amino Acids penetrate deep into the skin and hair to improve over-all health, moisture and shine
  • Treats damaged hair & Dandruff
  • TIPS: Replace mayo with mashed avocado, use it on tacos, salads, soups, wraps and more! We like throwing it on-top of a tomato-quinoa.

Kale

  • Manganese allows the brain to function at its best
  • Contains Amino Acids that offer an energy boost
  • Anti-Oxidants fight free-radicals
  • High Fiber offers healthy digestion and lowers cholesterol
  • Vitamin C is present and building the immune system
  • Very high in Vitamin K1, which promotes bone health and prevention of calcification in the arteries. If you have high blood sugar levels, this is a great food to lower/balance them! There are two types of Vitamin K; K1 & K2, and we need both.  I found in an awesome Article written by Carly that most doctors believe humans normally do not intake enough K2, which is not found in kale.
  • High amounts of protein
  • TIPS: Use kale instead of ice-burg or romaine, in salads with feta or Parmesan cheese, in a mushroom soup, or in a delicious fruit smoothie!

*I use these amazing Protein Shake Cups for smoothies so we can easily drink a breakfast shake or a fruit/veggie smoothie on a run!

Banana

  • High in fiber, low in calories- which means you feel fuller longer, while in-taking less calories to burn off.
  • Green bananas contain lower GI scores, and more resistant starches than a ripe banana. This helps you feel fuller, lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. These effects combined, lead to weight loss.
  • Rich in potassium, which regulates the movement of nutrients and waste products in and out of the body. Potassium’s tendency to help muscles contract and nerve cells to respond leads to a healthy beating heart and reduce blood pressure.
  • Bananas contain B6, which does quite a few things for the body. This includes; strengthening the nervous system, producing white blood cells, promoting weight loss, and preventing diabetes.
  • High in anti-Oxidants, which fight free-radicals.
  • TIP: Freeze bananas for a thicker smoothie, add slices on-top of a yogurt/granola bowl or acai bowl, add to quick oats for healthy sweet flavor, or make banana pancakes with a bit of milk, flour and baking soda! Bananas are so versatile & delicious that we keep them in the house constantly. A bunch maybe lasts a day.

*Try using a Banana Case if you carry one around with you! This prevents your snack banana from becoming bruised along the way, and keeps it deliciously fresh!

Pineapple

  • Contains Beta-Carotene, found in yellow, orange and dark green plant foods; which reduces the risk of developing asthma
  • High potassium foods like pineapple help reduce blood pressure
  • Vitamin C & other Anti-Oxidants prevent free-radicals; which are linked to cancer.
  • Free-Radicals are known to damage the reproductive system, so foods rich in the above nutrients will aid in conception.
  • Vitamin C helps reduce wrinkles, fight sun damage, and balancing collagen levels.
  • High fiber and water content allows pineapple to promote a healthy digestive tract and prevent constipation .
  • Bromelain, present the most in pineapples, is a protein digesting enzyme which produces peptides and amino acids that reduce swelling & inflammation.
  • TIP: Eat raw, frozen, or blended! We like to freeze pineapple and cover it with chocolate. (: Pineapple also proves delicious in a bean salsa, or marinade for meat. We chop it into bite-sized pieces and add it to lunches for the week.

Quinoa

  • Contains B-complex vitamins to promotes a healthy metabolism
  •  A fantastic source of iron, phosphorous, vitamin E, B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), potassium, B6, folic acid, copper, biotin, manganese, magnesium, calcium, beta carotene, zinc, and sodium.
  • High amounts of fiber and protein- which are great for staying full & losing weight
  • 20-hydroxyecdysone is also found in quinoa and may aid with weight control
  • Ideal for low-carb diets
  • Allergy restrictions such as wheat or dairy can be avoided by using quinoa
  • TIP: Add quinoa to any salad, soup, or breakfast dish. Try replacing rice & noodles with quinoa. I like it enough to add a bit of butter, oil, garlic, tomato and basil & call it a day. My meat eaters out there would probably love that under a big heap of marinated chicken.

Fish

  • Contains the majority of our daily proteins, vitamins, minerals and fats.
  • The many beneficial effects of seafood have primary been attributed to n-3 PUFAs such as EPA and DHA.
  • Contains phospholipids that, in short, decrease blood cholesterol and raise brain functionality
  • A major micronutrient in fish called protein which have some of the highest amino acid contents and are among the easiest to digest.
  • TIP: Roast salmon in the oven for the best result, and always use coconut oil if you can! Out of every other option; including butter, veggie oil, or olive oil- coconut oil proves to give you a super moist, tender salmon that’s full of flavor. All other options create a much more tough salmon. Stay away from cod & tilapia, as they are very dirty fish. Try adding seafood to tacos, salads, and wraps! We absolutely love to roast salmon in the oven and add it to a delicious salad or risotto.

I use coconut oil for absolutely everything. In soups, to fry food, to bake, in sauces, on my face, in my hair, on cuts & burns.. It is a cure-all, and the healthiest oil to cook with. I even give it to my animals. Here is the cheapest Organic Coconut Oil I could ind Y’all, because I know some of you are either curious or almost out. (:

 

In conclusion, eating can be delicious and healthy at the same time. There are so many super foods out there to try, and I will always share my experiences with y’all. I spend my day running around to meetings, working from my home office, preparing the shifts work for my assistant, and make phone calls- while Tyler cleans up the house, washes dishes, takes care of the yard and plays video games. We need something small, quick and easy.

We spend 2 hours together in the kitchen to prep every 3 days. Instead of 1-2 hours every single day a few times a day to cook meals, or picking up fast food for convenience. (Which we typically do not touch anyways)

You guys, we all love snacks.

I don’t eat full meals everyday. Instead I eat one full meal and three-five snacks through the day and change it up every time. Sometimes it is a pre-made veggie/fruit snack box I prepared, or a quarter of a Chipotle Bowl, or roasted brussel sprouts, or a pb&j. Sometimes I grab these little packs of goodness and take them on-the-go with me.

It’s pretty cool how well they fit into our lifestyle, actually- because we usually wake up & start going. Healthy Breakfast Recipe

 

 

Easy, healthy, quick and delicious.

My mother always tried to get me to eat oats as a child, but the texture always got to me. I learned as an adult with widespread taste-buds that when made correctly, oats are absolutely delicious!

 

There are a few pointers, though:

  • Do not use boxed brands, instead grab the real oats. Rolled or steel cut is what you’d be looking for. We prefer organic brands, such as Simple Truth.
  • If you are allergic to dairy and soy, almond milk is a delicious substitute.
  • Do not overcook the oats, as they will become mushy. There is supposed to be a light bite to them still.
  • Use low heat on the range, because this can burn easily.

Step 1: Add the milk & butter, and bring to a rolling boil.

Step 2: Add the oats & cinnamon, and turn the heat to low.

Step 3: Cover and let simmer for approx. 10 minutes, or until the milk is absorbed. Stir occasionally to make sure this does not stick during this step.

Remove from heat.

Step 4: Core & chop 1/2 of the apple, and add it to the pan along with 1/2 of the walnuts, and stir.

Add the rest of the apple & walnuts for toppings, along with honey drizzle, cinnamon, raspberries- and maybe a little whip-cream 😉

Jalapeno Poppers

How amazing are the Jalapeno Poppers whenever you find them on a menu? We have been ordering at oasis a lot lately, specifically for the poppers, and I sort-of had an epiphany.

I make everything from home, so why not these?

We always have them on hand, and most of the other ingredients as well- since I’ve been sushi obsessed.

The boys wouldn’t put these down! I had them sneaking into the kitchen to grab one while I wasn’t looking throughout the whole process of cooking and photographing the poppers. Within minutes they were totally gone.

Let me tell you…

There is nothing better than a homemade Jalapeno Popper, Bro.

The flavor is spicy, the crunch is still present in the nearly fresh jalapeno, and the price is 1/3 what you normally pay!!!

We picked up a lb of jalapenos, which is around 15, for only $2 and all of the other ingredients we had at home. You can literally make 30 poppers for around $5! How unbelievable is that shit when you pay $9 for 7 poppers anywhere else? That is so booty. I will never go back and since I have found our new favorite late-night snack food, I thought I’d share with y’all 🙂

What You Need:

  • 1 lb Jalapenos
  • 6-8 oz Cream Cheese

For Breading:

  • 1/2 c Flour
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Pepper
  • 1/4-1/2 c Milk (Depending on consistency)

HOW:

  1. Cut jalapenos in half, and core each half.
  2. Whisk cream cheese for better pliability, and fill each jalapeno half. Smooth the cheese around the edges of the pepper, to limit messes.
  3. Freeze for 1 hour.
  4. In the mean time, add all breading ingredients to a bowl, and whisk until every chunk is broken down. Refrigerate for 1 hour as well.
  5. Once both are cold, Heat a pot of oil on medium heat. Coat each popper and drop into oil. Fry 3-4 at a time only, unless you have a larger fryer. Once they float, they’re done- you do not want cream cheese to leak out.
  6. Set onto a paper-towel to dry excess oils, and enjoy!

WARNING: If you do not handle spice well, stop after 5. *Insert giggle* These babies are fresh, so they are HOT!

The BEST PART: These are even better re-heated! Bag the left-over poppers and put into the freezer, next time you want some just heat up fry oil and re-fry them. They will be crunchier and more delicious!

Cheese-y Broccoli Rice

Good afternoon Y’all!

Today is a beautiful day, isn’t it? I woke up after a night of intense dreaming, and woke up with determination to make a great day!

We have fallen out of our meditation habits for quite some time now, as life seems to busy our attention more often than not. This has honestly taken a huge toll on our mental state and energy levels, so we’ve recently been slowing down and re-thinking so the natural state of complete calm and comfort can return.

Our diet always pays the price when we fall to these mindsets, and we start to see a lot of pizza and pasta. But who doesn’t absolutely love the delectable mix of carbs and cheese smothered in sauce?

Well, upon going to the store recently- in a very good mindset- I picked up as many fruits, vegetables and greens as I thought sounded good at the time.

I needed a balance of cheese for Tyler, as any dish mentioned without cheese is un-interesting to him sometimes, so here we have an absolutely delicious cheese-y rice.

I obviously wanted mostly vegetables for dinner, so what better way to incorporate everything? After some brainstorming, ended up concocting this broccoli/carrot/cheese-y rice as a side dish to other roasted veggies and mashed cauliflower- and boy was it worth it. 

It turned out so delicious that I wanted to share it today 🙂

What You Need:

1 cup white or brown rice, cooked accordingly.
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped broccoli
1/2 onion, sliced thin
1 cup milk
5 tbsp. flour
1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup parmesean
1/2 cup mixed shredded cheeses

Spices:
Salt&Pepper to taste
1 Tbsp. garlic powder (If you like extra garlic)
1 Tbsp parsley ( or 1 handful chopped fresh)
2 tsp. Red pepper flakes
1 tsp. Oregeno

Step 1:

Use a pot of water and cook rice accordingly. Once done set aside and top with a few tablespoons of butter to sit.

Step 2:

Chop carrots, onion, garlic, parsley, and broccoli and add to a separate skillet with a tablespoon of butter.

Step 3:

Once the veggies are decently cooked through, but not yet soft- pour a majority of the veggies into a bowl for now, add the butter, and melt it completely. Then add the flour, and stir it into the vegetables. This should coat them in a paste-like texture.

Step 4:

Add the milk and combine. Once this is lightly simmering, add the cheeses.

Step 5:

Return the veggies to the sauce, turn off the heat, and combine!

Step 6:

Grab a baking pan of any style or size, but we realized smaller works best.

Layer the rice along the bottom of the pan.

Then, layer the cheese mixture evenly over the rice.

Continue layering until everything is used. add a nice layer of cheese on top, and bake in the oven at 365 degrees for about 20 minutes.

The cheese should be nice and browned when you pull this out of the oven 🙂

This tastes absolutely delicious, and provides a wonderful side dish to any meal!

But we kinda dug in and ate this as a meal itself. I even re-heated it with asparagus added!

Weight Loss Detox

Lose weight fast with this three day detox!

 

Tyler and I have been stress-eating a lot of bread and cheese lately, and it is beginning to take it’s toll.

Are you feeling the bloated holiday belly? Me too.

We’ve been sleeping extra, grumpy, lazy, and over-all groggy. The food we eat takes a bigger toll than most expect.

So we’ve decided to go on a three day detox.

The rules we’ve compiled for our self-made detox are as follows:

NO Dairy

NO Gluten

NO Heavy Sugar

 

This cuts out basically the rest of the bad foods we allow into our diet.

We always eat vegetables and fruits, while never eating meat or processed foods. The few things we allow in are wheels of real cheese, home-made mac N’ cheese, pizza, coffee and chocolate occasionally. When life gets a little crazy, that’s what both of us want to eat. After a while of in-taking crap we eventually notice the negative changes in our bodies- for example; a bloated belly, low energy level, mood-swings, and more.

We’ve noticed ourselves meditating less and grump-ing more.

This three day detox includes three different target drinks. The first day is cram-packed with green-goodness. This recipe will alkalize the body, while detoxing the kidney, liver, blood and digestive tract.

“Talk about good poops,” says Tyler.

This will flush out any of the crappy food or drink sitting in your system. It is also a half-ass fasting session.

You’re not supposed to eat any solid foods. Only water and these three juice mixes can flow through your system for the three days.

Can you do it? Honestly, can we? 

We sure do love our cheese.

So, here go’s.

 

The first recipe is as follows:

 

4 Apples, cored
2-3 Cucumbers
One handful of parsley
2 Handfuls of spinach
4 Stalks of kale
1 Bunch of celery
1 Lemon
1 Tsp ginger root

 

  • Wash all fruits and vegetables and prepare accordingly. Cut the cores out of the apples, squeeze the lemon, chop the parsley and greens, etc.
  • Add all vegetables to the juicer and press start. If you do not have a juicer [fun fact; I do not] then you can also blend everything and strain the juice into a pitcher.
  • Drink one in the morning, one for lunch, and one for dinner. Drink two water bottles in-between each detox. We recommend not eating anything otherwise, but if you need food, stick to vegetables and lean proteins.

The drink tastes delicious, full of fresh greens with a nice sweetness to blend the flavors.  After just one drink we felt the working of the nutrients flushing out toxins.

Christmas Is For Family

Ahhh the holidays. A time of delicious eats, snow to play in, and cozy pajamas.

Working from home is one of the best things during this time of year.

Fun posts like hot chocolate recipes and Holiday DIY’s are circulating like crazy, work is incredibly busy for everyone and life outside of work seems to get crazier by the day.

Sometimes, though, when life is its craziest- chores need done, business needs ran, and meetings are scheduled- we need to take a second to breathe.

We received a random phone call from my parents tonight, in the middle of a busy work day, for Walleye tickets.

We accepted.

So, we have a house to clean for the millionth time and a business meeting and a Blog post to finish on time- but what are the holidays and all of this holiday cheer being blogged about if we don’t appreciate our family.

We spend so much time throughout the year working and running from place-to-place trying to catch up with life.

Well, today’s 12 Days of Christmas Post is to tell all of our readers to go out and spend time with your family this weekend.

For example, go to a Toledo Walleye Game.

We took a break from life for a minute to see my parents for once.

And hey, Walleye games are pretty fun.

And the the beauty of my job? I can work right here in my chair.

Responsibilities are important y’all; and gifts for Christmas can be awesome. But spending time with family is better than any gift.

Easy Stir-Fry

If there is one thing we love it is a quick, delicious dinner! Stir-Fry is always a great option because the recipe is flexible to anything you have on deck! This can easily feed a family of 5, or a family of two with multiple days of lunches left-over.

Add Chicken rubbed with taco seasoning for a more filling meal!

Here is what You will need:

 

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Rice
1/3 cup Onion, chopped
1/3 cup Orange Pepper, chopped
4 Crimini Mushrooms, sliced
1/3 cup Carrots, chopped
1/2 cup Purple Cabbage, chopped or julienned
1/2 cup Broccoli
3 Tbsp. Oil
5 Tbsp Soy Sauce

Salt & Pepper to taste
1 tsp each:
Parsley
Garlic Powder
Red Pepper Flakes
Paprika
Cumin

 

We usually have about ten veggies in the house at all times, mixed according to what our current preferences were per grocery trip.  This time we had this delicious selection to add to the pot. If you enjoy water chestnuts, baby corn, snow peas, or corn they are very easily added to this dish! If cabbage and mushroom aren’t appealing to your palette, they are easily swapped for any two favorite veggies!

 

Here is how we did it:

Step 1: Wash and chop all veggies. Heat oil to medium heat in a large saucepan, and add veggies.

Step 2: Bring 4 cups of water to a boil and add the rice. Cook according to brand instructions, drain and set aside.IMG_1099.JPG

 

Step 3: Once the veggies are sizzling, add all spices.

Cook until all veggies are soft and very lightly brown.

Step 4: Create space in the center of the pan and crack two eggs. Allow the eggs to cook for 10 seconds before stirring to ensure color separation.

Once scrambled they should still present yellow and white color:

Step 5: Mix the egg and veggies together, and add soy sauce. Allow liquids to absorb for about one minute.

Step 6: Now add the cooked rice, and stir until completely mixed.

Add about 2 tablespoons of butter, and it’s ready to serve!!
